Installation Manual - 110 v7 operator install batch model
The consolidated v7 operator installation batch model, queue, guardrails, and documentation pattern.
This chapter records OP-GF-OPERATORS-20, the decision to stop running
operator work as many small manual entries and instead publish one coherent
installation-manual chapter per operator batch.
Governance
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Issue | #436 / OP-GF-OPERATORS-20 |
| Milestone | Workspace Governance |
| Governing ADRs | ADR 0016, ADR 0024 |
| Predecessor | #435 / OP-GF-OPERATORS-19 |
| Blog commit | f9e5d7f / Consolidate v7 operator batch plan |
Decision
Each operator batch must include the full lifecycle in one record:
| Phase | Required outcome |
|---|---|
| Preflight | Issue, milestone, phase, ADR coverage, cluster health, OADP posture, catalog/package/channel/CSV/image availability, and GitOps render evidence. |
| Install | Only batch-owned GitOps manifests are applied. Scope stays limited to the target cluster and operator family. |
| Validation | Argo health, Subscription, InstallPlan, CSV, operator pods, excluded operands, ClusterOperators, pods, CSRs, and domain checks are recorded. |
| Rollback or promotion | GitOps rollback path and CRD cleanup boundary are explicit. Forced CRD deletion requires a separate issue. |
| Documentation | The batch gets one coherent blog chapter and the operator version-lock reference is updated when package state changes. |
This preserves the user’s requirement to avoid many separate installation manual pages for every preflight, install, validation, and rollback step while still making each completed operator batch visible in the manual index.
Batch Queue
| Batch | Phase | Packages | Target | State |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | OP-GF-OPERATORS-21 | openshift-pipelines-operator-rh | spoke-dc-v7 | Completed as chapter 111. |
| 2 | OP-GF-OPERATORS-22 | cluster-observability-operator, netobserv-operator | spoke-dc-v7 | Completed as chapter 112. |
| 3 | OP-GF-OPERATORS-23 | tempo-product, opentelemetry-product, servicemeshoperator3, kiali-ossm | spoke-dc-v7 | Completed as chapter 113. |
| 4 | OP-GF-OPERATORS-24 | open-liberty-certified, app-facing cloudnative-pg | spoke-dc-v7 | Deferred by user decision as chapter 114. |
| 5 | OP-GF-OPERATORS-25 | cluster-kube-descheduler-operator, security-profiles-operator | hub/spoke after evidence | Not started. |
Active Exclusions
The following packages are not part of the active operator batch queue unless their domain is explicitly reintroduced:
Quay Operator
Container Security Operator
NFD / NVIDIA GPU Operator
OpenShift AI / RHODS
OpenShift Virtualization
Serverless
Quay is already external to OpenShift for this deployment. Container Security Operator is not required for parity while RHACS is the active security control plane.
Live Systems
OP-GF-OPERATORS-20 was planning and documentation only. It did not change
OpenShift objects, GitOps desired state, VM services, DNS, HAProxy, routes, or
secrets.
Validation
The blog build passed when the batch model was published. Later chapters 111 through 114 carry the batch-specific install or deferral validation.
